Climate Change & Resilience

Our Commitment to a Sustainable Future

At SAF-UK, we recognize that climate change is not just an environmental challenge — it is a human crisis affecting livelihoods, security, and peace.
Across Somalia, communities are struggling with the devastating impacts of prolonged droughts, flash floods, deforestation, and desertification, which have deepened poverty, displaced families, and intensified competition over scarce natural resources.
Our mission is to support vulnerable communities to adapt, recover, and thrive in the face of these growing challenges — while protecting the environment that sustains them.

Our Approach

We integrate climate adaptation, environmental protection, and peacebuilding to ensure communities can withstand shocks and build long-term resilience.

Our climate programming focuses on:

1. Climate Adaptation and Resilience Building

We strengthen the ability of communities to adapt to changing weather patterns through:

  • Construction and rehabilitation of water infrastructure (boreholes, shallow wells, and solar-powered systems).

  • Promotion of climate-smart agriculture and sustainable livestock management.

  • Training farmers and pastoralists on drought-resistant crops, water conservation, and soil protection.

2. Environmental Restoration

Environmental degradation drives both poverty and conflict. SAF-UK promotes ecosystem restoration by:

  • Supporting community tree-planting and reforestation campaigns.

  • Preventing deforestation through awareness programs and alternative livelihoods such as beekeeping and energy-saving technologies.

  • Working with local authorities to enforce sustainable land use and resource management practices.

3. Climate, Peace, and Stability Linkages

We understand that climate stress can fuel conflict. That’s why we link our climate programs with peace initiatives by:

  • Encouraging collaborative natural resource management among clans and neighboring communities.

  • Organizing dialogues and training that promote shared understanding of climate impacts and cooperative solutions.

  • Integrating youth and women into environmental decision-making as champions of peace and sustainability.

4. Community Education and Advocacy

We believe change begins with awareness. SAF-UK empowers local voices to advocate for environmental protection through:

  • School-based climate clubs and youth environmental campaigns.

  • Training local journalists and influencers to promote climate action.

  • Supporting local authorities to integrate climate resilience into development planning.

Our Impact

  • Implemented climate and peace projects in Hobyo District (Mudug Region) focusing on water infrastructure, tree planting, and natural resource management.
  • Trained hundreds of community members on drought preparedness and climate-smart farming.
  • Restored degraded lands and reduced resource-based conflicts through community-led environmental action.
  • Strengthened collaboration between local governments, civil society, and communities for coordinated climate response.

Our Climate Vision

We envision a climate-resilient Somalia, where communities live in harmony with nature and each other — equipped with the knowledge, skills, and resources to withstand future climate shocks.

At SAF-UK, we believe that tackling climate change is not just about protecting the planet — it’s about protecting people, promoting peace, and securing livelihoods for generations to come.
